Costume design for the Musical Theatre Department's final production
Institut del Teatre (Barcelona)
About the project:
Enchanté is a costume design project developed for a theatrical adaptation inspired by the atmosphere of 1930s Paris. Blending cabaret aesthetics with the historical context of the Second World War, the costumes support a story that moves between entertainment and conflict. The designs reflect the shifting identities of the characters while reinforcing the visual contrast between glamour and uncertainty.
Concept:
The costume design explores the tension between the playful world of cabaret and the growing shadow of war. Inspired by vintage silhouettes, burlesque performers and early twentieth-century fashion, the costumes combine elegance with a worn, lived-in quality. Rather than aiming for historical accuracy, the designs reinterpret the period through a contemporary theatrical lens.
Proposal:
The proposal focuses on versatility, allowing each costume to transform alongside the story. Through layering, contrasting textures and carefully selected details, the garments shift between different worlds and emotional states. A restrained palette of black, grey and deep red reinforces the cabaret aesthetic while supporting the narrative’s darker progression.
